Keep Your Home Number Abroad: Using eSIM and Your Physical SIM Together

One of the quiet worries about travel data is the phone number: if you swap SIM cards abroad, what happens to the calls, the bank texts and the two-factor codes that go to your usual number? With an eSIM, the answer is simple — nothing has to change.
Here is how dual SIM works, which line does what, and the settings that keep your home number reachable while a travel eSIM handles the data.
Two lines, two jobs
Modern phones can hold your physical SIM and one or more eSIMs at the same time. You assign each line a job:
- Your physical SIM stays active for calls, SMS and verification codes, using your normal number.
- Your travel eSIM carries mobile data only, at local prices instead of roaming rates.
Both are switched on together, so you are reachable on the number your contacts and your bank already know.
Setting it up in four steps
- Install the eSIM before you leave and give it a clear label such as "Travel data".
- Set the eSIM as your mobile data line in Settings — and turn off "allow mobile data switching" if you want it to stay put.
- Turn data roaming on for the eSIM only.
- Turn data roaming off for your home SIM so it never uses data abroad by accident.

What about calls and WhatsApp?
Calls to your home number ring on your physical SIM as usual — though inbound calls abroad can be billed by your operator, so check your plan. For most travelers, the better trick is to use WhatsApp, FaceTime or similar apps over the eSIM's data: free, and they work on the same number your contacts already have.
Two-factor codes and banking
This is the main reason to keep the physical SIM active: SMS codes from your bank, airline or email arrive normally. If your home plan charges for receiving SMS abroad, it is usually cents — far less than the cost of being locked out of an account on the road.
When a single-SIM phone is the exception
Dual SIM needs an eSIM-capable phone with room for a physical SIM or a second eSIM. Check yours in our compatibility guide. If your phone only takes one line, you will need to choose which is active.
Keep your number, pay local data prices. Pick your destination and be online the moment you land.

Will my contacts see a different number?
No. The eSIM only provides data; calls and SMS keep using your usual number through the physical SIM.
Does having two SIMs drain my battery faster?
Slightly, as the phone keeps two radios alive, but most people don't notice a meaningful difference over a day of use.
Can I use iMessage and FaceTime on the eSIM data?
Yes — they run over any data connection, including the eSIM's, and keep using your Apple ID.
