eSIM for Santorini: Data, Signal and Setup for Your Trip (2026)

Santorini is the kind of island where you pull out your phone every few minutes: a ferry arrival to confirm, a sunset spot in Oia to find before the crowds do, a taxi to book because the bus timetable stopped making sense, a table to reserve in Imerovigli for tonight. All of it needs data, and a good chunk of it needs it the moment you step off the plane or the boat.
This is a practical guide to staying online in Santorini: what a visitor's options really are, how much data a few days on the island use, where the signal is strong and where it isn't, and how to set an eSIM up before you travel.

Your options for mobile data in Santorini
- Roaming from your home operator. Inside the EU, "roam like at home" usually covers Greece within a fair-use limit. Outside the EU (UK, US, Canada, Australia and most other countries), roaming is often expensive and sold in small, pricey daily bundles.
- A Greek prepaid SIM. Cosmote, Vodafone and Nova all sell tourist SIMs. The catch is finding a shop: Santorini airport (JTR) is small, and the shops are in Fira, not at the arrivals door. You also need your passport and a few minutes at a counter, and your home number stays off while the Greek SIM is in the slot.
- An eSIM. You buy and install a Greece data plan before you leave, and it connects the moment your phone finds a Greek network. Your normal SIM stays in the phone for calls, texts and bank codes.
For most visitors on a short stay, the eSIM is the least effort. If you are coming from another EU country, check your operator's roaming allowance first, because it may already cover you.
How much data do you need in Santorini?
Santorini days are light on video calls and heavy on maps, photos and messaging. As a rough guide:
- 2–3 days: around 2–3 GB covers maps, ferry and restaurant checks, messaging and social media.
- 4–7 days: 5 GB is comfortable if you are also uploading photos and videos from sunsets and beaches.
- Working from the island, streaming, or sharing your connection with a laptop: go up to 10 GB or more.
If you are also visiting other islands or Athens on the same trip, one Greece plan covers all of them, so buy for the whole trip at once. Our guide to how much data you need abroad breaks the numbers down by activity.
Signal around the island
Coverage is good in the places visitors actually spend time: Fira, Oia, Imerovigli, Firostefani, Kamari, Perissa and Perivolos all have reliable 4G, with 5G in parts of the main towns. Two honest caveats:
- Crowded spots can slow down. On the Oia sunset walk or in Fira when cruise ships are in port, thousands of phones share the same cells. Speeds can drop for a while, on any network.
- Quiet coves and hiking routes. The Fira to Oia caldera path is mostly covered, but remote beaches and the far end of the island can have weaker signal. Download your map offline before you set off.
Arriving by plane or by ferry
If you fly into Santorini, the airport has Wi-Fi, but you will want data for your transfer or taxi straight away. If you arrive by ferry at Athinios port, there can be a long wait for taxis and buses, and signal helps you book a transfer and confirm your hotel pick-up. Install your eSIM at home on Wi-Fi so it switches on as soon as you land.

Is there an eSIM just for Santorini?
No. Plans are sold per country, so a Greece eSIM works on Santorini and on every other Greek island and the mainland.
Will the eSIM work at Oia for the sunset?
Yes, there is coverage in Oia. It can be slower when the sunset crowd is at its peak, because many people share the network, so send your photos before or after the busiest minutes.
Can I keep my own number while using the eSIM?
Yes. Your normal SIM stays active for calls and SMS, and the eSIM handles data. Most phones from 2019 onward support two active lines.
Should I use the airport Wi-Fi instead?
Airport Wi-Fi helps for a few minutes, but you will need data on the road, at the port and while looking for your hotel. An eSIM covers all of that.
